Wikipedia is yet another system that like previous examples, although digital, relies on the interconnectivity of agents, editors and writers, for a final output. Cities, on the other hand, are created to develop further and prosper, resulting in a bettered country and, perhaps, society as a whole. The cell needs to perish at some point as aged cells are not as efficient and will cause damage to the human body via mutations that would be resulted due to the significantly increased inaccuracies occurring during protein synthesis. For instance, the lifecycle of the former is significantly smaller, temporary in fact, while the whole point of the latter is to be able to exist for as long as possible. 3 Different businesses, their supply chains, are in fact subprocesses that, like cell organs, perform specific functions that would end up contributing to the socio-economic development of a larger ‘organism’, a nation.ĭespite this similarity, which is only metaphorical, the differences between the cell system and the city system are almost infinite. Professor Luis Bettencourt describes a city as a “sort of social reactor that is part star and part network” that is rooted within space and time resulting in growing and evolving of humanity. Similarly, just like cells, cities can also be described as individual components’ connections and interactions forming together to produce subsystems that ensure growth and stability of a larger system, in this case, a society. Protein synthesis will be responsible for continuing the cell’s lifecycle. This is evident through the subprocess within the eukaryotic cell when a copy of DNA, mRNA, is produced to travel through the nucleus to the ribosome, where proteins are coded according to mRNA. This way, the healthy growth and development of a multicellular organism will follow. Thus, since the correct final output is so detrimental, it is literally a question of life and death, the precise and very intricate behavioural functions carried out by organs have an equally precise interconnectivity. The smallest mistake or a mutation could cause fatality of the cell. organs, performing specific functions that influence and/or are influenced by other organs in order to maintain a cell’s lifecycle and therefore a multicellular organism, such as a human. 2 Hence, to demonstrate this notion, I have chosen to compare as well as contrast the systems of eukaryotic cells, cities and Wikipedia.Ī system of a eukaryotic cell is a one that involves cell components, i.e. However, a more fathomable explanation of the term is presented as follows a system is “a set of interacting or interdependent components” that are influenced heavily by context and various limitations and is in place to administer structure and behaviour. 1 The reason for such ambiguity of a definition is due to the profound differences embedded within various systems, although some common basic properties are often indeed shared. Source for these images (below): Īs Marshall McLuhan vaguely describes, “a system is something to look at”. That could occur in the visual and/or sonic form. A simulated glitch occurs in the area of the work that was touched. The interactive element of the work reacts once a person comes up to the tower to touch it, as though ‘interfering’ with the governmental issue. Perhaps the work goes from looking stark but ‘organic-like’ (smooth abstract shapes, forms, lines) to more digital and robotic. As the funding increases, a change occurs in the work. The concept of the ‘clock’ comes in use to demonstrate AI funding in various powerful countries (mainly US, UK, China). The g rim and dramatic atmosphere/aesthetic is something that would create an underlying sense of unease and intrigue in the audience.
